Ammonia, traditionally used in agriculture and industry, is now emerging as a promising alternative fuel for large ship engines. With growing concerns over air pollution, sustainability, and greenhouse gas emissions, the maritime industry is seeking cleaner fuel options. Ammonia stands out due to its ability to significantly reduce CO2 and other emissions compared to conventional marine fuels, along with its global availability and ease of production. Challenges such as safe handling, storage, and distribution must be addressed for its successful adoption.
Optimizing the injection of gaseous ammonia in combustion chambers is crucial for valve design and combustion efficiency. In our collaboration with the Institut für Kolbenmaschinen IFKM (KIT), the Background Oriented Schlieren (BOS) imaging technique was applied to diagnose ammonia fuel injection. This is an essential step to maximize efficiency and minimize risks, preparing the way for a sustainable future in maritime transport.
